As Jesus and the disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a women named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed - or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’” -Luke 10: 38-42 (NIV)Of all the stories in the Bible, this one continually brings me crumbling to Jesus’ feet every time I read it. You see, more often than not, I’m Martha who desperately wants to live life like Mary. Can you relate? Not unlike Martha, we too find yourselves getting caught up into the misplaced priorities of life. These misplaced priorities come in the form of earthly striving; working overtime to finish projects, emptying laundry baskets, dusting shelves, and decluttering living spaces.Rather than spending our days building relationships, we often find ourselves working to cross off items on a never-ending to-do list. Like Martha, this misplaced attention, moves our thoughts from contentment to complaining. God, in His most compassionate way, reminded Martha (and us) that Mary’s way of living is the right and only way to live. It is a reminder that while there will always be earthly responsibilities to complete, but making time for Jesus and those He has placed into our loving care should always be at the top of your to-do list. Will you pray with me? Dear Heavenly Father, my strivings are all too often dedicated to priorities that don’t last. I’m so sorry, God. Help me to remember to focus my day’s on those areas of my life that have heaven significance. Amen.
