We've all heard when it rains, it pours. We've all said it too. It seems when the rain starts in life, it doesn't stop. Rather, it just keeps coming. We get out an umbrella and continue on, but then the wind comes and rips the umbrella out of our hands. We then find ourselves soaking wet and searching for shelter. Wit no shelter in sight, we wilt. We give up. We assume that the storm will never end and it just keeps getting worse.
Here's the thing: the storms of life are always going to come. Just like a rainstorm on a day that we have plans, we don't expect it. It pops up out of nowhere, ruining our plans. We can't plan for these things to happen.
But do we let them completely defeat us?
I had been dealing pretty well with all that had been going on in life. But a couple of days ago, I finally let it get me. I wilted when my umbrella was finally taken. In fact, on that very day we got a rainshower here at home. One everyone has been desperately praying for since things had been so dry here. I have a three year old daughter, do you know how excited she was to come home during that rainshower? She excitedly got out of the vehicle, ran inside, grabbed her rain boots and asked, "Daddy can I go dance in the puddles?" She embraced it. How beautiful it would be to have the mindset of an innocent toddler. She jumped and danced in those puddles, a picture that I will never forget. She let her free spirit shine, not a care in the world. She enjoyed every minute of that beautiful rain.
As I was leaving for the evening, the rain had turned into a sprinkle, and right at the end of my street was a gorgeous, full rainbow. God's promise.
The storms will always come, my dear friends. Don't wilt, hang onto Jesus. He'll give you rain boots and equip us with all that we need during the storm. He is our safe place, our shelter.
"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart." Psalm 91:4 (NIV)
Go dance in the rain.
