“He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God” (Psalm 62:6-7, ESV).
I once heard the analogy that trying to stand on your own two feet is like trying to prevent a grain of sand from escaping your hand in a fist—impossible. The struggle to contain the particles drive the sand out all the more. Yet, despite the transparency of this I can’t help but feel like my instinct is almost always to run from God.
This is the same God that sent His son Jesus to die on the cross and conquer death. Even when his mortal body breathed its final breath, Jesus paid the price of sin and completed what he was commissioned to do. He didn’t run from his divine purpose.
My foundation is flawed, but the grace of Jesus means that I don’t have to manufacture my own stability. The grace of Jesus means that through turbulence, trepidation, and unrest the only concrete fact is that we are tethered to Him.
My fortress is not built on man’s empty promises or works; I cannot pretend to find it coincidental that this metaphor for God is based upon a substance in overabundance on our planet. How plainly ordinary, a rock is transformed into a “mighty” object, a catch-all for us to take refuge.
What do you envision when you think of a rock? At first appearance, it is common; but further examination reveals new qualities. The potential for Christ to be glorified by us, God’s humble servants, does not seem so farfetched when we consider that a stone propelled from a man’s hand can skip across water and leave ripples in its wake.
Just so, it is important to consider that it is not the pitch that leads to this pattern but the capacity of this mighty rock. God is your rock and your salvation. He protects you as a mighty fortress. You shall not be shaken unless God allows for you to be shaken. Sometimes ripples in our lives direct us back all the more to Jesus. Look for your refuge in the midst of the waves.
