I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called —his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.”
-Ephesians 1:18 (NIV)

This verse has never really meant much to me before today. Something changed, however, when I read the first few words, “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light...” Immediately I imagined a dark space being flooded with light, like a tsunami unexpectedly consuming the shores of my heart.

Three years ago, I lost my dear cousin to cancer. Upon hearing he was entering into his final days, I knew I needed to see him. I believed that I needed to share the gospel with him. At the time, I was living in New York City and he was in Belgium, so I got on a plane as soon as I could. I was relatively new to faith and had never explicitly shared the gospel with anyone, let alone a family member. Needless to say, I was a little nervous.

Soon after my arrival, I received news that my cousin had died. My heart sank; my mind went blank. How could this happen? I was supposed to share the Gospel with him, or at the very least see him one last time. It was then that I began to walk through one of the darkest seasons I have experienced thus far.

I’ve spent the last three years grappling with the goodness of God. Doubt, anger, and resentment have threatened to squelch my faith. If He truly is good, why did he let my cousin die before I got there? I still don’t have an answer to that question, but recently God has reminded me that He works all things together for good (Rom. 8:28). I can rest in the confident hope that He is sovereign. He's flooded the dark places of my heart with light.

I don’t know where you are in your faith walk, nor can I begin to comprehend the loss you’ve experienced or the obstacles you’ve encountered. Even still, I urge you to allow God to flood you with light today, that you may begin to live from a place of confident hope that He is good.
