Daily Delight
The last few months of my life have been very eventful and busy, and they have left me with little free time. By the time I actually did have a minute to spare, I was exhausted and wanted to use the time I had left to be alone and recharge. I caught myself telling God that I was going to use that time to spend with Him, when in reality I didn’t invite Him into the moment at all. I now realize that I’ve been living an oxymoron as I’ve been trying to find rest by avoiding the One who gives me life, instead of going to Him.
In Matthew, Jesus says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:28-29, NIV). Jesus tells us that we can come to Him when we are burnt out, and He will refresh and restore us. “He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul” (Ps. 23:2-3, NIV). Not only did I find myself totally worn out these past few months, I’ve also caught myself going through the motions and even wondering what the point of it all was. When we leave Jesus out of our day to lives, we lose our main focus and start to question why we even do the many things on our to-do list. Jesus says in John, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, NIV).
We cannot do life without the one who gives us life.
So if you’ve been tired, if you’ve been busy, and if you’ve been questioning the meaning behind your to-do list, I want to challenge you to stop what you’re doing and go and spend time with God. Put Him first and make your time with Him a priority. Spending time with God puts everything in perspective and reminds us of who we are and what we’re called to do. And there’s absolutely nothing on this earth that we need to do more than to live in relationship with our Father.
