Daily Delight

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. -Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)
Come to me”. What an invitation. The King of Heaven actually asks you to come to Him. The Lord of all welcomes you with open arms. He promises to show you “how to take a real rest”. This does not mean that the pages of your journal will sit empty, but He can teach us to “live freely and lightly”. I don’t know about you, but I definitely need to learn how to do this. I can get so weighed down with things that, in the scheme of eternity, bear no importance. I can get caught up in feeling guilty each time I slip up and totally forget about those “unforced rhythms of grace”. But so often in these moments our human instinct tells us to hide our faces in shame, to deal with things on our own. And, effectively, we distance ourselves from our Father. God asks us to come near to Him, to walk with Him, to keep company with Him. This is the key to a life of freedom and rest.
Whatever baggage you are carrying today; whatever is weighing you down and tiring you out, drop it and run into His arms. Let His love overwhelm you and comfort you. You are not created for anything “heavy or ill-fitting”. You are not designed to be an independent being. Rest in His grace. Reside in His presence. And learn to live a life of freedom and joy.
