I had a picture in my mind this morning of God placing his hand on my shoulder. It was this strong, steady, calming touch that made me sigh with relief and let go once again. I knew in that instant that He was there and He was in control, there was nothing for me to worry about. Suddenly everything was at rest. This is rest: trusting in His sovereignty, not trying to control or manipulate situations, not trying to get somewhere that He isn’t taking you. Rest is giving up control and letting Him be Lord. It’s something to celebrate because it means we’re off the hook! We can’t be in charge of everything in our world, God didn’t design it that way. He designed us to be dependent on Him and that requires trust. Let’s trust that He’s really good and He’s going to do right by us even if it doesn’t look like it just yet. We’re taught that trust is earned and that’s true to an extent. We wouldn’t trust God if He was inconsistent in His nature. But that’s what the enemy does; he tries to twist our perspective to put the blame on God when things don’t go our way to make us believe that God isn’t who He says He is and dissolve our trust. In Deuteronomy 4, Moses is reminding the Israelites as they pass into the Promised Land of all that God did for them in the desert so that they would keep their trust in the Lord as they moved into new territory.
"Don’t forget anything of what you’ve seen. Don’t let your heart wander off. Stay vigilant as long as you live. Teach what you’ve seen and heard…” (Deut. 4:9 MSG)
I think we would benefit by doing the same thing. Get in the Word to remind yourself of all the places God proved that He’s trustworthy, look back on your life and see where He came through for you. Let this build confidence in you as you let go and become fully dependent on Him.
