Now that we’ve got that covered, I want to share the review of the week with you! It comes from our dear sister abbyrgroce and she says,“I absolutely love all these podcasts because these foundational truths are put into a spotlight that we need to remember, I am constantly reminded of how huge our God is and what it means to follow Him. It pushes me to dive in deeper into His word and allows me to create a better routine for meditating on His word.”Thank you, Abby! Thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know how God is using this podcast to bless you. God has certainly used them to make a mark on me. It really fuels my fire to keep creating Christ-centered content just for you!

The Ultimate Promise Keeper

Now, as you know, today we are going to be talking about the promises of the Ultimate Promise Keeper. I feel like this is one of those episodes where I should encourage you to take notes, but I know that may not be possible. The good news is, if you hear something you need to write down, you can always refer back to it. But if you are in a place where you can keep a pen and notepad on hand, I definitely recommend it.Alright, let’s do this thing.I want to preface today’s episode with one of my favorite verses, 2 Corinthians 1:20. It says, “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory” (ESV).Okay, now I’ve got a question for you. Have you ever made a promise to someone that you ended up breaking?I am going to say with complete certainty that yes, you have. Probably not intentionally, but all of us have. Let me tell you why that is….why we are the way we are.

Why We Are the Way We Are

At their core, our hearts are sinful. Sinful hearts make it easy to break promises because we are often blinded and consumed by ourselves. Another reason we break promises is that we overpromise. Meaning, in the midst of making a promise, we neglect all the factors in play of said promise,  and then -- of course --  something happens completely out of our control that hinders us from seeing the promise through. It doesn’t matter though...we’re the ones who made the promise. So even if something completely out of our control happens after we have made the promise, it is our fault the promise was not kept.No matter how pure our motives may be in making promises, if we break them enough -- or, for some people, if we break them even once -- all of our future promises will come across to others as nothing but void.   When it comes down to it, we are not strong or smart enough to always keep our word.

Example

Let’s say I promise my family I’ll be home for Thanksgiving and then something unexpected happens and I learn my flight has been delayed due to a snowstorm. That means I am completely helpless when it comes to keeping my promise because I cannot control the weather and I cannot fly. I had the best of intentions, though, right? And technically, it wasn’t “really” my fault...but the words left my lips and a promise is a promise. Therefore, I broke my promise.  Promises like this happen everyday. And so many of them are broken because of the factors we neglect to consider when making them. We do not know everything and cannot control the world around us. But you know what? This is not the case for the ultimate Promise Keeper, our good and gracious God. And friends, this is GOOD news.

The Ultimate Promise Keeper Keeps His Word

God is omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (everywhere at the same time, all the time), and omniscient (all-knowing). His divine knowledge and presence literally encompass all of creation. There is nothing He cannot do and nothing He does not see. Unlike us, when God says He is going to do something, He keeps His word.2 Peter 1:3 tells us, “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire” (ESV).

Genesis 12

Today, we are going to really dive in to the Word of God in order to take a look at some of our Father’s promises and how He keeps them. My prayer for each of us is that, in doing so, our hearts will be filled with a mighty peace and even greater trust in the heart of our Creator and His Word. If you have your Bible handy, open up to Genesis 12:1-3. I will be reading from the ESV translation. “Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’”Imagine the glory of God appearing before you and speaking ALL of these promises over you. The Promises of Genesis 12Look at the promises God makes in verse two:Verse 2- “I will make of you a great nation” ; “I will bless you” ;  “...and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing”Now let’s look at the promises God makes in verse 3:Verse 3- “I will bless those who bless you” ; “...and him who dishonors you I will curse” ; “...and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”There are so many promises spoken by God here, but the last promise we see here in verse 3 is crazy to me:“...and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Say What?

If we promised something like this to someone, we would sound so ridiculous, right?“Hey, Susie. I just wanted you to know that in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Honestly, the only thing I can imagine happening in this scenario is Susie inching herself away from me slowly, but surely! But it would be a completely different story if the Creator of the Universe spoke this over you, right?

Abram Went

God appeared before Abram in ways he simply could not deny and...as Genesis 12:4 says...Abram went, as the Lord had told him...” (Gen. 12:4, ESV)

The Promise of Genesis 15

Another promise to Abram follows in Genesis 15:1-6. Let’s take a look: After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. In Genesis 15, God promised Abram he would have his own son and that his offspring would be as many as the stars in the sky! Have you ever tried to count the stars in the sky?

1 Billion Trillion Stars

Let’s get factual here for a second: There are about 10 billion galaxies in the observable universe. The number of stars in a galaxy varies, but it is assumed an average of 100 billion stars per galaxy means that there are 1 billion trillion stars in the observable universe. I literally had to Google how many zeroes this was..if you’re curious, it’s 21.1 billion trillion stars in the OBSERVABLE universe. Even the best of the best scientists know there is no accurate number. But I believe this is the very point of the promise God made to Abram.

Blessed Beyond Measure

Abram would be blessed beyond measure. This means Abram’s wife, a 90-year-old woman named Sarah, would conceive and bear a child..she would be the “mother of nations” we read about in Genesis 17:16. But when Sarah learned of this news, she strongly doubted that it would actually happen.

Sarah Laughed

Here’s what happened in Genesis 18:12-15:12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”  But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.” -Genesis 18:12-15 (ESV)Sarah literally laughed in the face of God. And He called her out on it, too. But what did Sarah do when God addressed it? She LIED in the presence of her Creator, immediately after He had just made a PROMISE to her! Look at verse 15 again: But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”Lying is an accusation against God that He is not good...that He doesn’t really know what He’s doing...that He needs us more than we need Him.

Rooted in Doubt

Can you imagine being called out on a lie by the audible voice of God? I think I would fall over if I actually heard Him speak to me like this! Sarah’s lie was ultimately rooted in doubt. And if we are honest with ourselves, we doubt God just like she did- and probably more often than we would like to admit. Here’s the good news about Sarah’s story…and your story, too: Despite the fact that Sarah lied in the presence of her Maker, God still saw His promise through.

God Keeps His Promises

Can you imagine giving birth at 90 years old? If we are healthy and blessed enough to live that long, our bodies would still be so fragile and frail. And I’m almost certain we would be more concerned with crossword puzzles and episodes of The Price is Right than we would be with babies! The only way Sarah was going to have this child was--literally--by the strength and working of God’s Spirit in her. Here’s the lay of the land, sister: It does not matter what we believe about the Word of God...He is still going to move when He needs to move! Our human actions, thoughts and words cannot and will not thwart God’s sovereign plan. Nothing we do will change His mind. When He promises to do something, He will surely do it! Thank goodness for that, too. Can I get an amen?

God Does Not Tease or Waste Time

God did not tell Sarah she would give birth at 90-years-old to play a cruel joke on her. The Creator of the universe does not waste time. God told Sarah -- promised Sarah -- that she would give birth at 90-years-old in order to fulfill His promise to her of being a “mother of nations”. To fulfill His promise to Abraham of giving him offspring that would be as many as the stars in the sky. Isaac was the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah! Through him, Abraham’s descendants would multiply and all the families on the earth would be blessed. When we read stories like Abraham’s, we have to remember the bigger picture: God is concerned with making Himself known in a world that desperately needs to know His name. He is achieving this by using us, His beloved children, to help spread His Word.

God's Promise to Abraham

That being said, God did not give Abraham and Sarah a son simply to put a smile on their faces. He did this to help start the spread of Christianity throughout the ancient world to where it stands today, thousands of years later! You know what that means, right? We are here today as part of the fulfillment of the promise God made to Abraham through Isaac- which was ultimately fulfilled through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Let that sink in for a second! The promises God has made to us find their fulfillment in His son, Jesus Christ.

The Promise of God's Love

Take, for example, the promise of God’s love for us. God did not just promise His love. He proved it with His Son.Romans 5:8 says, “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ESV). Christ took what WE deserved on the cross so that we would not have to. He literally took His last breath with us in mind so that death would not have the final say...so that we could claim the victory of what He achieved on the cross.Friends, Love has won. And this Love is ours! Saturate your heart with this promise today.

The Promise to Do Us Good

Let’s talk about another promise we are given in God’s Word: the promise to always do us good.  Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (ESV).  Have you ever been reminded of this verse at a time when it was less than comforting to hear? Maybe because it felt as if God had already abandoned you, or because you didn’t agree with God’s no or not yet at the time. Here’s a truth I want you to hear today: God is always good, always working and always on your side. He always hears the cries of your heart, but He will not always tell you yes or give you an easy way out. Sometimes, God is going to say no and the sin in us -- our pride -- is not going to like it.God does not tell us no just because He can...in fact, it’s the exact opposite. He tells us no because He wants the absolute best for us. And only He knows what that is.

God Delights in Discipline

Hear me when I say God does not delight in telling us no. Rather, He delights in disciplining and sustaining us along the way because He loves us. And loving His children like He does means telling them -- us -- no, sometimes.Let’s say you are washing dishes while your kids play in the front yard. You look away from the window to scrub a stubborn piece of food off of a plate for just a second, and when you look back up one of your kiddos is running toward a busy street after the ball they were kicking around. Instead of just letting the ball go, the child went after the ball because they wanted it...because they did not want to lose it. Your child knew the danger of running into the street, yet they did it anyway. Now, if you are a mom and you are listening to this- I am not sure how you would have handled this, but had it been me I would’ve gotten a good old fashioned spankin’ and a talkin’ to. And I would have cried my little eyes out too, thinking my parents didn’t love me or care that that ball was my favorite. When really, the whole reason discipline took place is because they loved me too much to watch me put myself in danger.

Choose to Trust

The same thing applies to our relationship with God. The Lord beckons us with a beautiful invitation: This way to life. This way to freedom! And also a protective warning:  Do not go that way, dear child, there is only pain there! I’m not telling you this because I know this truth any better than you do. I’m telling you this because we need to be reminded of it continually- especially in the self-saturated world we are living in today.May we choose to trust in the Lord’s promise to always do us good- even if it means acknowledging His NO at times.

The Danger of False Promises

There is so much I can say regarding the truth of God’s promises, but I also want to take a few minutes today to address the DANGER of false promises...you know, the ones that sound so good to the ear but are not found in His Word when we actually take the time to look.  You have probably heard the saying, “God will not give you more than you can handle.” And, to be completely transparent with you, I disagree with this statement 100%. Unfortunately, this is one of the many false prosperity-driven promises that linger within Christianity today. I believe that if we, as God’s people, truly believe this, we are surely setting ourselves up for heavenly disappointment.

Our Struggles For His Strength

This world and the struggles of this life are indeed far more than we can handle on our own. At times, I have personally felt as if I were drowning in my struggles and no one could help me! Have you ever been there? Have you ever found yourself saying, God, I cannot handle this anymore! In Psalm 22, we see the Psalmists ball their fists in rage, and shout at God, “Why have you forsaken me?”And in Psalm 88, in their sadness they say, “darkness is my closest friend.” Even Jesus experienced this. The night before He was crucified, He cried out in the garden, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death...” (Matthew 26:38). The Good News regarding our suffering is that although it can be more than we can handle, we can find our sovereign, all-knowing, ever-present, almighty God in the midst of it all. We can run into His loving embrace and exchange the weight of our struggles for His strength. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all of our anxieties on God because He cares for us. THIS is the promise we are guaranteed, my friends. God does, and always will care for His children. He loves us so much that He invites us to hand Him our burdens in exchange for His great love and care!

God Sustains

Know this, however: Giving God our struggles does not guarantee a cure or the outcome we are desperately hoping and praying for. It does, however, guarantee spiritual growth, maturation and peace in His presence- the very things that will sustain us along the way.We will absolutely go through trials of having to bear more than we can handle on our own, but God will never -- never -- give us trials in which He will not sustain us!I think this is one of the absolute most important truths that we must not forget, so we are going to wrap up today’s episode by marinating in it for a little bit with the life of Joseph. In it, we are going to see how God is the Ultimate Promise Keeper AND the Great Sustainer!

Joseph and the Promises of God

In Genesis 37, we are first introduced to Joseph at the age of seventeen.Reading his story, we quickly discover Joseph is his father’s favorite, which is something that created very strong tension between Joseph and the rest of his brothers- 11 of them to be exact. In Genesis 37:4 we learn the brothers would not even speak to Joseph because of their hatred toward him. And in Genesis 37:5-11, God gives Joseph not just one dream, but two. In the first dream, Joseph and his brothers were binding sheaves, when all of a sudden Joseph’s sheaf stands upright and his brothers sheaves bowed before it. This dream implied Joseph would rule over his brothers one day. The second dream involved the sun, moon, and 11 starts...and it was an extension of the first. The implication of this dream is that Joseph would rule over his entire family one day, not just his brothers. These dreams and the fact that Joseph shared them with his family was the cherry on top of the mountain of hatred Joseph’s brothers already had for him. In fact, his dreams served as the catalyst for the first voicing of the brothers’ attitude toward acts of violence.

Conspiring to Kill

In Genesis 37:12-17, all of the brothers except for Joseph, journeyed to pasture their family flock where there was good grassland. Joseph’s father, Jacob, sent Joseph to check on the well-being of his brothers and their flock. When the brothers spotted Joseph approaching from a distance in Genesis 37:18, they quickly conspired to kill him. In their minds, by killing him they would make certain Joseph’s dreams, AKA God’s promises to Joseph, would not become a reality. However- Reuben, one of the brothers, had a change of heart and acted somewhat heroically on Joseph’s behalf. Take a look at  Genesis 37:22 with me: “And Reuben said to them, ‘Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him’—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father” (ESV).

Joseph is Sold

Ironically enough, the brothers listened to Reuben, and Joseph ended up being sold as a slave to Egypt. The brothers were satisfied with this decision, but only because they were completely unaware of the role they were playing in God’s promise over Joseph’s life! After Joseph was gone, Joseph’s brothers took his robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood in order to fake his death. Then, they took it home to their father and asked him to identify whether or not it as Joseph’s. Jacob confirmed it was Joseph’s robe and mourned for several days to follow, all while Joseph was sold as a slave to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, in whose home Joseph resided.

A Great Slave

Joseph was a great slave. In fact, he was the best Potiphar had. Potiphar trusted Joseph to the point where he became overseer of Potiphar’s house and all that Potiphar had! Unfortunately, however, Potiphar’s wife got in the way. In Genesis 39:6-10, we learn that Potiphar’s wife had a thing for Joseph, and as we continue reading we find that Joseph refused her multiple times. As a result of his refusal, Potiphar's wife accused him of sexual misconduct, which landed him in prison. Think about all Joseph had been through so far. His brothers hated him so much that they faked his death and sold him into slavery, AND while he was a slave, he was falsely accused of sexual misconduct and thrown into prison, yet, despite it all, he continued to cling to His Heavenly Father in the midst of his suffering and temptation. He knew God was working and that He would use all things for His glory and Joseph’s good. He knew the Lord was on his side.

A Great Prisoner

As we learn in Genesis 39:21, ...the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it...” (ESV). Joseph lived the best possible life any prisoner could. He was literally a prisoner...in charge of all the prisoners. Not only was Joseph the best slave, he was also the best prisoner. As Genesis 39:23 tells us, “Whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed.”But wait...it gets better!

Joseph Interprets Dreams

While in prison, Joseph accurately interpreted the dreams of the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker, who, according to Genesis 40:1, had committed an offense against the king of Egypt. Based off their dreams, Joseph properly interpreted the cupbearer would be restored to his position but the baker would be hanged. Fast forward a little bit and we read of Pharaoh having disturbing dreams in Genesis 41. When the cupbearer heard this news, he remembered that Joseph properly interpreted his dream while in prison.Joseph was quickly brought in to interpret Pharaoh's dreams, where he shared with Pharaoh that, based off his dreams, a famine was coming, and a long one at that. The next seven years would be abundant with grain, but the seven years to follow would not. It would be a very severe famine.Joseph went on to offer Pharaoh more than just his God-given gift of dream interpretation.

God's Promise to Joseph Shines Through

He also suggested a plan where the events he interpreted from Pharaoh’s dreams could effectively be addressed, which would prevent damage to the country. In verses 34 through 36, Joseph proposed that a wise and discerning person be appointed to manage the economic policy. He proposed that enough food- 20 percent of the crop each year- be stored during the years of plenty to provide a reserve for the years of famine. And everything would be “under the authority of Pharaoh.”This plan was music to Pharaoh’s ears! Here is where God’s promise to Joseph shines through…

Joseph Becomes Prime Minister

God used Joseph’s bold faith to convince Pharaoh that Joseph was the one in whom God’s Spirit rested. Thus, he decided Joseph was the “wise and discerning” person needed to manage the economic policy that Pharaoh was looking for. As a result, Joseph became prime minister in charge of both the palace, and the country, second in command to Pharaoh. This is important, sis. Don’t miss it! The very thing Joseph’s family rebuked him for -- his dreams-- was the very thing that brought him great favor. His interpretation of Pharaoh's dreams were true, and his gift was recognized as divine! Now let’s fast forward to the famine….

Famine and Family

This is where it gets even crazier! Because of the famine, Joseph’s brothers were forced to travel to Egypt to ask for food for their family. Of course, Joseph was the one they had to go through for the grain. However, upon their arrival, Joseph recognized his brothers but they did not recognize him. At this point in time, it had been around twenty years or since Joseph had last seen his brothers. From the brothers selling Joseph into slavery ALL the way to the prophecy of Joseph’s dream becoming fulfilled, God was with Joseph every step of the way. In Genesis 50:20, after Joseph had revealed himself to his brothers and reconciled with them, he told them, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

His Glory, Our Good

Friends, even when Joseph’s brothers intentionally did something evil against him, God used it for good! In our struggles, we may not ever be as fortunate as Joseph when it comes to physically seeing  the good that God is doing, but we can rest assured that He is indeed at work...that He will use even the evil actions of the world for His glory and our good.Joseph had anything but an easy life, yet he was a man of integrity and self-control, and he worked hard in all he did. God’s favor rested upon from start to finish, and hs response to life’s setbacks paint a truly wonderful picture for us, but we can take more from the story than just his example: God’s greater plans of a Savior through the lineage of Abraham were unfolding through the life of Joseph.

Joseph's Life and God's Promises

That’s right- Joseph’s life reflects God’s faithfulness to His promise and covenant to Abraham; the promise of a King that would redeem, restore and reverse the curse of death and offer the free gift of salvation to anyone who believes in Him. Because of the lineage of Abraham and the cause of Christ, we can trust in the truth that our almighty God will carry and sustain us through to the end! Sisters, the Lord is with you! Every single detail of your life --from the seemingly mundane ones to those milestone moments -- has been carefully orchestrated for a greater purpose. God had you on His mind when He sent His only Son to die on the Cross for your sins and mine. Don’t you forget that. All things may not BE good, but God can and will use all things FOR good. And as He does so, He will protect your faith in Him by the power of His Holy Spirit. This is the promise of Romans 8:28: “We know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

No Matter the Circumstance

No matter your circumstances -- if you are struggling with anxiety attacks or depression, if you lost your job unexpectedly, if you or someone close to you has cancer, if your pregnancy test keeps telling you no -- no matter the circumstance, God will be with you and for you, and He will sustain you every step of the way. Even if you’re confused, angry and empty and want nothing to do with Him, this is His promise to you and it will not waver. He will surely see it through. Let us replace the false promise of,  “God will never give me more than I can handle”, with the true promise of, “God will never give me trials in which He will not sustain me.” Let us rejoice in the good news of God’s unwavering promises. Let's rejoice in the heart of our Ultimate Promise Keeper.

Thank You

Thank you so much for tuning in to today’s episode of the promises of God. I hope it reminded and encouraged you with the truth that our God is a God of His Word. What He promises is not contingent on how we behave. His Word is contingent on His Word alone. And thanks be to God for that. Amen?Don’t forget, next week we are wrapping up season one with a rapid-fire question and answer episode. Nothing is off-limits. I’m so excited about this!
